Following a brutal weekend sweep in NY, the St. Louis Cardinals recorded a sweep of their own over the Pittsburgh Pirates and have now won four out of the previous five games, hoping to use Adam Wainwright's big game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night as motivation moving forward.
At the plate, Wainwright hit a two-run homer on a two for three night that saw him drive in four.
"He's certainly, for a pitcher, capable of swinging the bat", Counsell said.

"We've watched him pretty closely", Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Thames.
"Too many missed opportunities", Matheny said. But he found his form against the Brewers, allowing just a pair of runs on six hits without a walk to win for the first time this season. He failed to strike out a batter for the first time in 20 starts. "I gave up a couple of singles but he's the one who hit the ball hard".

The Brewers had another game on Thursday night (they beat the Cardinals, 7-5), so, of course, Eric Thames hit another dinger.
Wainwright homered and drove in four runs while getting his first win of the season, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-3.
Randal Grichuk slammed an RBI-double and Seung-Hwan Oh struck out the side in the ninth to get the save. "It felt good. We needed that". To make room, the Brewers designated outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis for assignment. He walked two and struck out seven. Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell announced that RHP Matt Garza would make his 2017 debut Monday against the Reds. He's 7-1 with a 2.32 ERA over his last 15 starts. He is 4-4 with a 4.30 ERA in 13 career starts against Milwaukee.
