RCMP stopped 887 people trying to illegally enter Canada last month

US border patrol agents apprehended two Canadians and a Nigerian as part of a wider human smuggling investigation that also ensnared a Saskatchewan woman, officials said Thursday.
"With not getting any of these numbers, and we know there's some criminals coming in through the mix of all these people jumping across the border, the local residents are getting a lot more concerned", reeve Greg Janzen said.
A Saskatchewan woman has been charged with human smuggling following a months-long cross-border investigation.
Last month, the RCMP intercepted 887 people crossing between official border points, with 644 of them crossing into Quebec. The agreement states that people can't make refugee claims at Canada-U.S. land border crossing points because they should have lodged one in the country they first entered. All nine have made refugee claims.

"These apprehensions were the direct result of a combined effort which included the United States Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations, Burke County Sheriff's Office, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Canada Border Services Agency", the CBP statement said. The nine asylum seekers were in the vehicle, according to police.
Police allege they found Omoruyi driving nine west African asylum seekers across the United States border into the prairie province of Saskatchewan Friday night.
This isn't the first time Canadians have been charged with human smuggling.

Court documents show that Victor Omoruyi, who is a Canadian citizen, was arrested April 14 after an SUV was stopped south of the North Dakota-Saskatchewan border.
In Manitoba, an asylum seeker was arrested after allegedly assaulting a border guard.
Two asylum seekers claiming to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo cross the border into Canada from the US on March 28 near Hemmingford, Que.
Critics have blamed the Safe Third Country agreement between Canada and the USA for rise in border jumping.
