Turkey's PM Binali Yildirim warns opposition against street protests

Hundreds gathered at the headquarters of YSK calling for cancelation of the results of the referendum which grants the president new jurisdiction.

Bulent Tezcan, CHP deputy leader, told CNN-Turk the YSK's decision to reject the petitions sparked a "serious legitimacy crisis".

This referendum outcome will embolden the Turkish government: its first actions post-election included prolonging the state of emergency for three months and signalling the possibility of holding a referendum on reintroducing the death penalty.

A defiant Erdogan has dismissed the complaints, saying the vote had finally put an end to debate over the powerful presidency he has long sought.

Most shockingly, as the polls were about to close, the YSK [Turkey's Supreme Electoral Council] announced that it would accept votes that had not received the official seal of the local polling station-in other words, the stamp that proves the ballot came from the polling station, and not from somewhere else.

Kılıçdaroğlu said he respected the nation's will but the decision on unsealed ballots had overshadowed the results.

The association stated that its regret is not over the outcome of the referendum, but because of the desire to overlook clear and harsh violations of the law that have the potential to impact the results.

"We want to encourage democracy", Sanders said, according to a transcript released by the White House press office. "We call on all actors to show restraint and on the authorities to launch transparent investigations into these alleged irregularities found by the observers". The change has raise concerns of "ballot-stuffing" - where extra votes are cast illegally to manipulate results. He accused the OSCE of arriving with preconceived opinions.

He said the observers' conclusions "lack objectivity and are extremely partial".

He continued with this message as he campaigned for president in 2014, but throughout his campaign never offered details on why the existing constitution wasn't working. It has now been extended three times since the July 2016 failed coup.

The Turkish government has been widely condemned by Western nations for its repression of opposition figures following a failed military coup previous year.

There were protests in Istanbul with a few thousand people crowding the anti-Erdogan Besiktas and Kadikoy districts, blowing whistles and chanting "We are shoulder to shoulder against fascism".

The main secularist opposition CHP party and the pro-Kurdish opposition HDP are seeking to annul the referendum, while the bar association and global observers have said the vote was marred by irregularities.

Tourist centres such as the Mediterranean city of Antalya, through which some 6 million foreign visitors entered the country past year, also overwhelmingly voted "No".

How the trade-off turns out well will depend both on how constructively the Turkish government, and Erdogan in particular, uses the new constitutional powers. Approximately 500,000 Kurds in the Southeast are displaced and homeless as a result of attacks by Turkey's security services. Even Kurdish towns that have been assaulted by the military in the name of defeating terrorists turned out to vote against Erdogan, as did the large secular populations of Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
