USS Carl Vinson Wasn't Sailing to Deter N. Korea as Announced

A U.S. aircraft carrier-led strike group is heading to the Korean Peninsula in response to recent North Korean provocations as confirmed to CNN by a United States defense official.

The U.S. Navy Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is steaming for waters off the Korean Peninsula, while joint South Korean-U.S. military exercises are set to continue in South Korea until the end of April.

The Defense Department told the Times that the Carl Vinson is now headed for the Korean Peninsula and will reach the region later this month. Navy announced the commander of U.S. Pacific Command directed the USS Carl Vinson strike group to head north.

Last Tuesday, Defense Secretary James Mattis said at the Pentagon, "She's on her way up there [toward the Korean Peninsula] because that's where we thought it was most prudent to have her at this time".
