U.S. agents arrests some 200 undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles area

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 188 people across the Southland - with the majority in Los Angeles County - during a five-day operation, officials said.

"Additionally, earlier this month, ICE detailed the results of its six-week nationwide gang apprehension operation, which resulted in the arrest of 384 illegal immigrants, as well as 61 foreign nationals voluntarily admitted into the country".

"By taking these individuals off the streets and removing them from the country, we're making our communities safer for everyone", David Marin, field office director for ICE's enforcement and removal operations in Los Angeles said in a statement. Almost 75 percent of those arrested during that period this year are convicted criminals. The arrestees included a convicted rapist and a previously deported cocaine trafficker, ICE said in a statement released on Thursday.

Among those who had previous criminal convictions, 43 were for drug offenses, 27 for domestic violence and 30 for driving under the influence.

According to federal authorities, more than 41,000 people have been arrested by ICE since Trump signed an executive order in January strengthening immigration enforcement policies. Those with outstanding deportation orders or who illegally returned to the United States after previously being deported are subject to deportation again.

A Southern California woman has taken the first step toward suing county and federal officials after she says she was detained by immigration authorities for deportation even though she is an American citizen.

That crime is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Smaller numbers were identified as Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Armenian and Russian nationals. Those individuals will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and arrested by ICE, when appropriate.

The arrests took place from Saturday, May 20, through Wednesday in L.A., Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The raids are seen as US President Donald Trump's attempt to deliver on his campaign pledge of deporting as many as three million undocumented immigrants. But that number did increase from 87 such arrests last year to 224 this year.

“His daughter is active-duty military, his son-in-law is active duty military, ” Pasquarella said.

"The same data shows that numerous non-sanctuary jurisdictions saw a higher increase in ICE arrests under Trump policies than did areas with major sanctuaries".

The remaining individuals not facing criminal prosecutions will be processed for removal from the country.
