Los Angeles wildfire largest in city's history, mayor says

Fire warnings are in effect for Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana, where fires have spanned more than 850 square miles (2,200 square kilometers). By mid-afternoon, it was 101 in the coastal city - hotter than Phoenix.

Fire crews increased containment to 30 percent overnight ahead of a statewide heat wave.

A massive fire has burnt more than 5,000 acres in the Verdugo Mountains north of downtown Los Angeles and forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

The Castaic Fire is up to 25 acres and forward progression has stopped, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

"Our priority is saving people, saving property", Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said.

No injuries or property damage were reported, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Garcetti also requested "that the Governor declare an emergency", a procedural step that would allow for the municipalities affected to access state and federal help.

"We're constantly evaluating and it's dependent upon the wind shifts", said Terrazas. Firefighters sent additional resources to that neighborhood for structure protection and to assist with evacuations.

Cal Fire said on its website that the fire near Oroville had consumed almost 6 square miles (15 square kilometers) and was 30 percent contained.

Fire officials said erratic wind and weather were posing the greatest challenges to extinguishing the fire.

A wind shift at around 2 p.m. caused embers to blow across I-210, igniting dry brush that resulted in another fire.

"We had been hoping for a mellow season", Kat Doescher, senior winemaker at Madrone Estate Winery outside Sonoma, said shortly after sunrise.
