Venus Williams reaches US Open quarterfinals

Petra Kvitova has clinched the biggest win so far in her comeback to tennis. This weekend she continued her extraordinary recovery by outclassing pre-tournament favourite Garbine Murguruza at the US Open in NY. Kvitova, who is left-handed, wasn't sure she'd be able to hold a racket again.

The 2016 French Open victor has made an effort to adapt on all surfaces this season, which has been key to her rise to number three in the world rankings. It took me while to find it.

And she's doing all this six years after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease that dropped her ranking to as low as No.137 in 2012. She rattled off three straight games to bring the set back on serve, and then played phenomenal tennis in the tiebreak to win the opener, going on to win the match in straight sets.

"But at the end of the day when I go out there and someone's across the net from me, they're playing well".

She is in the quarterfinals in NY for only the second time in 10 tournament appearances; the other such run came in 2015, when Kvitova lost at that stage to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta.

"Even though I was winning 4-1, I think she was playing great", said Muguruza. "It was the kind of moment that I dream of to come and play again on the big stages", she said.

This was the first meeting of the tournament between two grand slam champions and a clash between arguably the two form players of the week.

Czech Petra Kvitova beat Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza in the US Open fourth round on Sunday while Venus Williams beat Carla Suarez Navarro.

Kvitova, a double Wimbledon champion, was sidelined for five months after suffering a serious injury on her left hand when stabbed at her home and she made her return to competition at the French Open in May.

Kvitova next faces USA's Venus Williams. She laughed and replied: "Well, if we are only three, I don't know if it's advantage".

As Tropical Storm Harvey travels inland toward Louisiana and continues to flood Texas, the death toll too has continued to rise. Police said the Beaumont woman and her young daughter were travelling on a service road when the pair came across "high water".

The 37-year-old American is the oldest woman left in the singles tournament.

Both players have overcome their own adversity to be in the position they are in, but neither player will be thinking about that when they meet for a spot in the U.S. Open semifinals on Tuesday. Stephens has won 12 of her past 14 matches, a remarkable run for someone who was off the tour for 11 months because of foot surgery in January. In the quarters, Carreno Busta will play No. 29 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, while No. 17 Sam Querrey of the United States takes on No. 28 Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Sharapova's U.S. Open ended with a 5-7 6-4 6-2 loss to Latvian Anastasija Sevastova on Sunday, but her week-long run will help polish the Russian's tarnished brand.
