SA to mark Veterans Day with ceremonies, concerts, parade

Since Veterans Day is on a Saturday this year, many events are being held on Friday - with some continuing throughout the weekend.

For those who can't attend, the Courier will be showing live video of the parade from the newspaper office on Main Street.

Women who served in the armed forces will be honored at this year's Veterans Day parade starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

It stepped off at 12:30 front of City Hall on Lakeside Avenue.

Members of local veterans organizations and supporters walked along the parade route while thousands of spectators lined Civic Center Park and nearby streets to show respect and honor for our veterans.

The ceremony, which is open to the public without charge, is sponsored by the Virginia War Memorial, a division of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, in partnership with the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities.

In Alameda, the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum will host a ceremony featuring a wreath toss and card-making station where visitors can write thank-you notes for veterans.

"Today - and every day - we honor the valiant, fearless and dedicated men and women who have served our nation in the armed services", Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and will be led by retired Navy Rear Adm. William Copeland Jr. The parade ends at Mill Creek Park Veterans Memorial off Broadway.
