Delhi most unsafe, tops crime chart among 19 major cities

In a dubious distinction, Andhra Pradesh stands fourth in the country in the sexual harassment cases, according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Thursday.

Incidentally, Delhi also reported the maximum number of cases of heinous crimes such as murder, kidnapping, abduction, and economic offences.

The NCRB report further states that 13 road rage murders were reported from Maharashtra, three from Gujarat, two each from Manipur and Chhattisgarh and one each from Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.

Theft was the most common crime committed against foreigners in India in 2016, followed by other IPC crimes such as snatching or causing hurt.

In addition, among the 19 major cities, Delhi also reported 38.8 per cent of total IPC criminal cases, followed by Bengaluru at 8.9 per cent and Mumbai at 7.7 per cent. Delhi has the distinction of the highest crime rate of 182.1 as compared to the national average of 77.2.

As per the NCRB, UP was the state where the maximum number of crimes took place previous year, while Delhi reported the highest crime rate.

Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of rape with 4,882 cases (12.5 percent) and 4,816 (12.4 percent) respectively followed by Maharashtra 4,189 (10.7 percent) past year, according to the NCRB data. The city had seen 107 cases of juvenile delinquency in 2014 and 128 in 2015.

According to NCRB's 2016 data, a total of 136 murders due to caste conflict have been reported in India in 2016 whereas, the number of the same in 2015 was 828.

Madhya Pradesh comes out top with 20.6% of the total number of cases in 2016 followed by Maharashtra - 18.4%. "Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2", the NCRB report says.

There were a total of 4.30 lakh cases registered under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code and state laws in Maharashtra in 2016. The next highest incidence was recorded in Maharashtra, at nearly 10 per cent, while Puducherry witnessed 8.6 per cent of such crimes. MP registered 13746 cases of crime against children in 2016.

Goa saw a high number of cheating cases while Delhi had more forgery incidents.

According to the report for 2016, covering 19 cities with a population above two million, Delhi reported 33 per cent (13,803 cases of 41,761) of crimes against women a year ago.

Madhya Pradesh also headed the list of states for atrocities, crime against Scheduled Tribes with 1,823 cases (27.8%), followed by Rajasthan (18.2%) with 1,195 cases and Odisha (10.4%) with 681 cases during 2016.
