Cam Newton: NFL asks for explanation over Carolina Panthers treatment

The Carolina Panthers have come under fire after quarterback Cam Newton returned to Sunday's game after seemingly being knocked out - without being put through the NFL's newly-enhanced concussion protocol.

Newton absorbed a hard hit by Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata on a sack. Newton took a knee as he walked toward the sideline and pointed toward his right eye. Medical personnel looked at him as a he took a seat, and Newton missed one play as Derek Anderson relieved him.

Newton said after the game that he was hit in the eye and that he did not suffer a head injury. He was seen on the sidelines with ice on his eye and claimed a visor poked him in the eye, which is why he went down.

Asked if Newton had displayed any signs of a brain injury, coach Ron Rivera said, "I don't think so".

Jordan said the hit that Newton absorbed was significant.

The NFL and union announced changes to the protocol last month in the wake of Texans quarterback Tom Savage returning to the field after having an apparent seizure after a hit.

But he's made a special exception this year for Kalil; he also thanked the veteran tackle for allowing him to get a sack in the first meeting against the Panthers.

"I can not believe the National Football League blew their new concussion protocol in the 2nd week with Cam Newton", Nowinski wrote on Twitter.

This is not the first time the Panthers' handling of Newton has come under scrutiny.

However, the question could become whether or not Newton should have been taken to the locker room for evaluations.
