Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership pact signed

The agreement was on shaky ground a year ago when US President Donald Trump pulled his country from negotiations for what was then known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The signing of the CPTPP is another important step for the agreement, which will enter into force after it has been ratified by six countries.

The signing is expected to speed up ongoing negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), an Asean-led pact involving seven CPTPP members, which Singapore is pushing hard to conclude. "It has a direct effect not only on the economy, but also on labor, on the environment and on health issues". Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, tweeted that it is a "truly a sad and bad day for the United States, as TPP comes into force without us while U.S. deciding on which countries to apply unwarranted and ill-advised tariffs".
