DFS Requests Information on Deutsche, Other Banks' Dealings With Jared Kushner

A spokesman for Kushner's attorney Abbe Lowell told The Times that Kushner "has met with hundreds of business people", and "has taken no part of any business, loans or projects with or for" his family's business since joining the White House.

Maddow recounted the Times' reporting that the private equity firm Apollo Global Management gave Kushner's family business a loan after billionaire founder Joshua Harris had been visiting the White House.

Also early in 2017, Kushner met with a chief exec from Citigroup in the White House. At the time, the spokeswoman for Kushner Cos. said the firm "has cooperated and will continue to cooperate with any reasonable request for information". Reports have indicated Mueller has interest in Kushner's interaction with a Chinese company during the transition, Anbang Insurance, which was considering investing in the Kushner Cos. -owned 666 Fifth Ave. property in Manhattan.

But it's fairly unprecedented for a senior adviser to hold official White House meetings with the heads of companies that are considering loans to his family business, government watchdogs told the newspaper.

Apollo defended its move in extending the loan to Kushner to the New York Times.

It was one of the largest loans Kushner Cos. received past year.

According to the report, Joshua Harris, the founder of Apollo Management - whose loan refinanced the mortgage on Kushner's Chicago skyscraper - who was advising Trump administration on infrastructure policy, also met with Jared Kushner past year.

It was reported this week Kushner's security clearance was downgraded from top secret to secret because of issues with his background investigation. Following the meeting Apollo, which is the world's largest private equity firm, lent $184 million to Kushner's family real estate firm, Kushner Companies.

At the time, Harris was providing advice to the Trump administration related to infrastructure. In Kushner's case, a permanent clearance wasn't coming anytime soon; according to the Washington Post, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had warned the White House on February 9 that recent revelations in Kushner's background investigation "could be an obstacle to his clearance process".

Christine Taylor, a spokesperson for Kushner Cos., said Kushner's White House role had not affected the company's relationships with financial institutions.

In recent days, it has emerged that Kushner's White House security clearance has been downgraded.

Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, was repeatedly forced to amend his security application forms over the past year due to his worldwide dealings.

His status had given him access to classified information, including the president's daily briefing and intelligence summary.

The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) made the requests to Deutsche Bank, Signature Bank and New York Community Bank for information on loans and other financial arrangements including lines of credit and loan guarantees a week ago, the person said.

But Kushner Companies' spokeswoman said they'd received no letter from the state and called the inquiries "harassment exclusively for political reasons".
